Susan from New Mexico Asks: "Why the K in Magick?"

Good question Sue! The definition of "magic", according to Webster is: "the art of producing illusions as entertainment by the use of sleight of hand, deceptive devices, etc." What we Pagans do is certainly not slight of hand. We are not pulling rabbits out of hats or making silk flowers appear out of a black tube. The "k" in "magick" is used to differentiate what we do from what magicians do.

Magick is an act to bring about intentional change. Some say the word "magick" was repopularized by Aleister Crowley, who defined it as "the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with the will." Now this is what we do! We use our will and focused energy to bring about change -- in ourselves, our circumstances, our lives, in the world around us.

At The Hearth, we feel that the magick we create is special and powerful and we use the spelling "magick" to remind ourselves not only of that power, but of the responsibility that comes with creating and using it.

Comments from Cindy in New Mexico

"Magick is a system (or systems). Words written or spoken have power. The numerology associated with words can make a difference in spellwork. And as for the spoken word... uttered words are vibration, vibration is energy, and energy can bring down mountains."

NOTE: The numerology Cindy speaks of is twofold. Eleven is the principal number of magick, according to Aleister Crowley, and the letter "K" is the eleventh number of many alphabets, including English. Further, the numerological sum of the word "magick" is 9, and in many interpretations, the number 9 means "the highest level of change". -- The Hearth Witches
